Christmas time! We think about love and happiness, a lot of (unnecessary) gifts, brightness, joy, freedom, warm and cosy places, more gifts, famliy… Of course we donate a lot for causes that we want to have a change in. But to be honest: We are really good in forgetting. Forgetting what actually happens in Yemen for example.
That´s why Igor Dobrowolski – an artist and street artist who is painting since 2014 – created billborads to show the real life of children in Yemen.
Combined with the christmas rush – we are all in at the moment – it becomes very absurd and to think about.
The technique Igor uses is called adbusting which is the short form of advertisement busting. That means the aim of the advertisenment is turned into a different or even totally turned meaning. Adbusting can be done with mixed media techniques, spray cans, markers, pens, paper… whatever. Almost every material placed at the right place can bring a different message. A lot of artists and street artists use adbusting a form of their protest against the dictatorship of the comsumer society or the society itself. In the case of Igors project he puts the „ads“ into the reality of the war in Yemen. This is a very interesting turning of classical adbusting.
